Legacy of Innovation

Birla Tyres embarked on its technological journey in 1991 at its Balasore factory, initially receiving technology and R&D support from Pirelli, Italy, to produce world-class tyres. Since then, it has been our relentless pursuit of innovation—anchored in robust research and development—that has powered the growth and evolution of our tyre business. With significant investments in R&D infrastructure and by attracting top talent globally, Birla Tyres became self-reliant in developing advanced technology for radial tyres in both the passenger car and truck bus segments.

Birla Tyres was the first Indian company to introduce Light Weight Highly Durable Bias Tyres for Trucks and Buses. Our R&D team developed the unique technology for the Mining and Industrial Tyre “Kalapatthar”, a flagship product that has captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Our state-of-the-art Material Research & Development center also achieved remarkable success in developing ply compounds using nano silica and special additives to enhance tyre durability and retreadability for all types of Nylon Bias Tyres.

The core competencies of our R&D team include Advanced Compound Development, Simulated Tyre Design, Predictive Tyre Testing, and Sustainable Tyre Development. New Product Design

Our R&D team focuses on two key pillars of new product design:

Fundamental Research enables us to understand and establish a technological foundation to address future global challenges in new product development, ensuring we remain ahead of the competition. The R&D team develops innovative tyre solutions that adhere to stringent performance, safety, and environmental standards. Utilizing world-class digital design software such as CATIA and Autodesk, alongside cutting-edge simulation tools like Abaqus, HyperMesh, SilentRoll, we leverage top-end workstations to design and develop proprietary tread patterns and tyre structures with unparalleled speed and precision.

Tyre Simulation

Our core strength in New Product Development lies in two key areas:

  1. 1. Tyre Simulation for Mould Cavity Design
  2. 2. Tyre Construction supported by Predictive Testing

These approaches enable us to design tyres with greater accuracy, significantly reducing the number of iterations needed for prototype development and testing. This not only lowers development costs but also accelerates the time-to-market for new products. Leveraging cutting-edge simulation tools to predict tyre performance under diverse conditions significantly enhances our design process, minimizing the need for extensive physical testing. Tyre simulation stands as a pivotal tool in both the development and testing phases, ensuring exceptional quality and reliability.

Compound Development

Use of new emerging materials like Nano materials, Silane, Tailor made rubber and specially designed resins is key focus for advanced compound development. Our laboratories are well-equipped for compound mixing, green rubber property testing, physical and mechanical testing, as well as analytical and chemical testing. This comprehensive capability allows us to develop new compounds and accurately predict product performance in real-world conditions.

Raw Material Research

Our raw material research focuses on utilizing sustainable bio-based and recycled materials, as well as emerging new materials such as Carbon Nano Tubes, Graphene, Nanoclay, Nano Silica, Carbon Black coupling agents, dispersing agents, and specialized resins. These materials are aimed at enhancing compound performance, including lower rolling resistance, improved carcass and belt durability, extended tyre life, increased load-carrying capacity, and retreadability, while also addressing end-of-life tyre management. Our R&D team actively collaborates with raw material suppliers to conduct joint research on innovative materials for tyre applications.

Product Industrialization

Our R&D team excels at transforming prototypes or concepts into fully developed products ready for mass production. This comprehensive process involves refining designs, optimizing manufacturing processes, ensuring stringent quality control, and efficiently scaling up production to meet market demands.
